The goal of EAI (Enterprise Application Integration) solutions is to allow the communication between different applications of the enterprise. They generally revolve around a middleware communication on top of which have been added modules for data exchange, routing and transformation.
The latter will be responsible for communication between applications and integrate middleware. 

Enterprise Service Bus

ESB architectures are the continuity of EAI offers by proposing an architecture based on a message bus (JMS) and standard protocols (XML, XSLT) for communication and data processing as well as the creation of services ( WebServices) for access to data.
Due to their "Services Oriented"architecture, ESB are often associated with SOA.
